12 Simple healthy habits to pick up in your twenties

I’ve only recently started truly thinking about what I eat, how much I exercise, whether or not I am self-reflecting etc. When you begin making moves toward healthier decisions it can be a bit overwhelming to try and make a bunch of major changes at once.

What I definitely don’t want to do is get so overwhelmed I give up and stop focusing on healthier decisions completely.

So I figure if I can start to change little things here and there and make them habits, then eventually all of these little changes will begin to add up. What are some of the little things I’m working on changing into habits? I’ve put together a list.

Simple Healthy Habits

  1. Switch to a reusable water bottle instead of using plastic water bottles
  2. And while we’re at it, drink more water. (Of course. We’ll get this one out of the way now.)
    • A simple way to do this? Drink water with every meal even if you are also choosing to drink something else.

  3. Find easy meals to create at home instead of eating out (and/or meal prep for the week)
    • I’ve been sticking to a few foods I know I like and trying to create different versions of them. I know I like sweet potatoes so I’ve been trying to spice them in different ways. I know I like fish filets so I try to cook them with different spices and add an easy vegetable on the side such as green beans. Another easy thing to switch up and add to? Whole wheat pasta. You can add different sauces, proteins, veggies – you name it.
  4. Dabble in some new fitness classes
  5. Take the stairs over escalators or elevators when given the option
    • (A seriously easy switch!)
  6. Cut electronics out of your bedtime routine

    • I know this might be easier said than done but the benefits are worth it. Personally I have an easier time falling asleep if I’m reading a book and I wake up less groggy.
  7. If you’re a coffee drinker, learn to like it black

  8. Switch to whole grain breads
    • They really don’t taste that much different than white breads. Especially if whatever sandwich or meal you’re making is on point.
  9. If you’re a chocolate lover, switch to dark chocolate.
    • Personally I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate anyway so I have this one covered.
  10. If you have a hard time eating enough vegetables buy some frozen spinach and keep it on hand to throw into some fruit smoothies.
    • As long as you have more fruits and some juice in there you shouldn’t really be able to taste the spinach at all.
  11. Switch rice with quinoa.
    • Now I know what you might be thinking. It’s just not the same. And it’s not as good. But I promise there are certain brands and ready-made flavors of quinoa that are just as good if not better than rice. Specifically Roland’s garden vegetable quinoa and their sesame ginger quinoa.

Of course these bags end up being a little pricier than rice so you can also just buy a big plain bag of quinoa and flavor/spice it however you desire. (I find that boiling it with chicken or vegetable broth instead of water adds a lot of flavor.)

  12. Drink a cup of green tea here and there. (Or everyday if you remember.)

So there you have it!
